Population structure of the copepods Centropages typicus and Temora stylifera in different environmental conditions

چکیده
The population structure (NI to adults) of the copepods Centropages typicus and Temora stylifera was investigated in parallel at two sites in the eutrophic and oligotrophic waters of the Gulf of Naples (Tyrrhenian Sea) with the aim of identifying the environmental factors that modulate the occurrence of these calanoids that are abundant in the neritic waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Monthly zooplankton sampling was conducted from May 1999 to June 2000 in 5e7 discrete depth layers in the upper 200 m with a 70-mm mesh net. Temperature, salinity, and fluorescence profiles were recorded by CTD casts. The remarkable differences observed in the temporal and spatial patterns of the two populations throughout their developmental cycles seem to result more from different responses to environmental factors than from different life-history traits. C. typicus was abundant in early to mid-summer and was distributed in the whole water column; T. stylifera followed in late summereautumn and occurred preferentially in the upper 30 m. Temperature was the main regulating factor for T. stylifera. The availability of autotrophic food appeared relatively more important for C. typicus, although unequivocal signals were not observed, suggesting that more complex trophic interactions likely affect the dynamics of the two populations.

Reproductive cycles of dominant calanoid copepods in the North Sea
The seasonal cycles of reproduction of the dominant copepods Acartia clausi, Temora longicornis, Centropages hamatus, C. typicus and Pseudocalanus spp. were studied at Helgoland Roads, southern North Sea. Egg production rate, clutch size, number of spawning females and prosome length were compared with temperature and phytoplankton concentration. Female A. clausi, T. longicornis and Pseudocalan...

Fluorogenic assays for a set of five hydrolytic enzymes involved in digestion and food utilization (alanine and arginine aminopeptidase, lipase/esterase, chitobiase, and beta-glucosidase) were optimized to measure activities of these enzymes in the same extracts of individual small North Sea copepods. The enzyme activities of Acartia clausi, Centropages typicus, Corycaeus anglicus, Paracalanus ...
متن کاملSeasonal cycles of egg production of two planktonic copepods, Centropages typicus and Temora stylifera, in the north-western Mediterranean Sea
The reproductive biology of copepods plays a key role in seasonal population oscillations and therefore determines, among other things, annual production (Kiørboe et al., 1988; Fransz et al., 1989; Ianora and Buttino, 1990; Ianora et al., 1992; Halsband and Hirche, 2001). Reproduction is affected by various environmental factors, basically by temperature and food availability (Dagg, 1978; Landr...
متن کاملHeterospecific mating and partial prezygotic reproductive isolation in the planktonic marine copepods Centropages typicus and Centropages hamatus
Using three-dimensional (3D) video observations in laboratory experiments, I describe interspecific and intergeneric mating behaviors and motility patterns of the common planktonic marine copepods Centropages typicus, Centropages hamatus, and Temora longicornis. These observations are then used to estimate heterospecific and conspecific male mate-search volume rates and mate encounter rates in ...
متن کاملHabitat temperature is an important determinant of cholesterol contents in copepods.
Effects of habitat and acclimation temperature on cholesterol contents were examined in oceanic and inshore species of copepods. The cholesterol content of five species of thermally acclimated copepods was determined, and nine species (representing six families) were sampled to assess the role of habitat temperature. The species selected have maximum habitat temperatures (and temperature tolera...
